The 5G network test was completed in Manassa near Delhi, with a speed of 3 Gbps and a delay of only 1 millisecond in the 3.5 GHz band. Although 5Gbps ultra-high speed has appeared in 5G testing in other countries, the telecom industry may reduce the speed to about 1Gbps in the final commercial use.
India's rapid transition to the 5G era is mainly due to the country's large population and the 4G network is overwhelmed. BharTI Airtel has 290 million mobile subscribers, and its main competitor Jio has 100 million subscribers. Although there are not many compared with the number of 4G users in China, communication industry analysis company OpenSignal pointed out that India's 4G network has achieved explosive growth in the past year, and operators are indeed under pressure.
According to OpenSignal's recently released 2018 global LTE report, India ranks at the bottom of 4G network speed, with an average speed of only 6.07Mbps, which is 10Mbps lower than the global average and only one-seventh of Singapore's fastest 4G speed. More intuitively, India's 4G network speed is actually equivalent to the speed of the US upgrade from 3G to 4G in 2010-2011.
The Indian report pointed out that some operators in the country tried to lobby the government to slow down the auction of 5G frequency band, because the price war in the 4G era caused many operators to carry huge debts. However, BharTI Airtel still insists on promoting the development of new technologies.
