Recent data from IDC highlights a promising future for both VR and AR. According to their forecast, global VR/AR headset sales are expected to reach 12.4 million units in 2018, marking an 80% increase compared to the 8 million units sold in 2017. More importantly, IDC predicts that this growth will continue over the next five years, with an average annual increase of 52.5%. By 2022, total sales could reach as high as 68.9 million units.
This rapid growth is driven by the maturation of the entire VR/AR ecosystem. New devices such as the Lenovo Mirage AR smart helmet and Oculus Go have entered the market, while improvements in hardware performance and reduced costs have significantly enhanced user experiences.
IDC also forecasts that in 2018, standalone VR devices will account for 14.1% of the market. By 2022, this share is expected to rise to around 50%, with AR devices making up 19.1% and VR headsets reaching 29.8%. In contrast, VR headsets that rely on PCs or other peripherals may see a decline in sales. However, AR head-mounted devices, such as Microsoft’s HoloLens and Magic Leap One, are expected to see strong growth, benefiting from continued innovation and investment in the space.
