Over 125 years of history have positioned Philips Lighting as a pioneer in transforming the lighting industry. From its early days, the company has continuously driven innovation and set new standards.
In 1891, when the second industrial revolution was gaining momentum, Frederick and Gerard Philips opened a factory in Eindhoven, Netherlands, combining incandescent lamps with power technology to revolutionize how people lived and worked. This marked the beginning of a legacy that would shape the future of lighting.
Throughout the 20th century, Philips became a leading light bulb manufacturer in Europe, setting the stage for global expansion. By the 1990s, it had entered the LED market and quickly became a leader in energy-efficient lighting solutions. As we moved into the 21st century, Philips Lighting took another leap forward by embracing smart connected systems and services, paving the way for the Internet of Things (IoT) era.
Looking back at its journey, Philips Lighting has never been absent during major industry shifts—it has consistently led them through cutting-edge technology and visionary business strategies. Today, the company is a global leader in the lighting industry, covering the entire value chain from light sources to luminaires, lighting control, and integrated solutions.
With over 14,000 patents and three R&D centers worldwide, Philips Lighting continues to push the boundaries of innovation. It employs approximately 32,000 people across more than 70 countries, supported by a strong global sales and service network.
The Chinese market has become one of the most important regions for Philips Lighting. With China’s rapidly growing consumer demand, the company has increased its investments significantly. For instance, it established the second-largest R&D center in Shanghai, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the region. In Chengdu, the company also set up its most advanced LED application center and the largest professional lighting production base in western China, boosting the adoption of smart lighting solutions across the country.
In 2016, Philips Lighting made a significant move by listing on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange (Euronext). The following year, the company announced a strategic rebranding, changing its name to **Signify**. The new name reflects a broader vision: lighting as a smart language that connects and transmits information. The stock ticker was updated to “LIGHT,†symbolizing a new chapter in the company’s evolution.
Eric Rondolat, then CEO of Philips Lighting, emphasized that the rebranding was not just about a name change, but a reflection of the company’s strategic direction and a stronger global identity. While the Philips brand will continue to be used for products, the new name highlights Signify's focus on smart lighting and IoT solutions.
At the Frankfurt Light + Building exhibition in 2018, Signify made its debut with a fresh visual identity, transitioning from blue to green. The booth showcased lighting applications in cities, retail, offices, and homes, emphasizing the idea that light is now a powerful communication tool.
Although the Chinese name for Signify has not yet been officially announced, the legal name change is expected to take place after several months of preparation. This transition marks a new phase in the company’s global strategy, reinforcing its position as a leader in intelligent, connected lighting.
With over a century of innovation behind it, Signify continues to lead the lighting industry, shaping the future of how we interact with light in our daily lives.
