The 5G era is rapidly approaching, and major telecom operators are taking on significant responsibilities. According to reports, China Mobile announced in 2018 that it would build the world's largest 5G trial network. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to lead in the next generation of wireless technology. It was also expected that by 2018, the number of 4G users would surpass 700 million, marking a major milestone in mobile connectivity.
The 2018 World Mobile Congress took place in Barcelona, Spain, with the theme "Creating a Better Future." China Mobile participated in the event, showcasing its theme "Smart Connection, New Future." The company presented cutting-edge technologies and products centered around 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT), digital home solutions, international business, and devices. One of the key highlights was the announcement of the world's largest 5G test network, signaling China Mobile's strong commitment to leading the global 5G rollout.
Chairman Shang Bing emphasized that with the rapid development of information and communication technologies, new trends and patterns are emerging across industries. To stay ahead, China Mobile is actively shaping the future by deepening its "big connection" strategy and promoting the integration of four key areas—mobile internet, cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence. He also noted that by 2018, 4G user numbers were expected to exceed 700 million, while household broadband users would surpass 130 million.
During the conference, China Mobile unveiled its latest R&D achievements, including the first end-to-end interoperability between the world’s largest base station, terminal chip, and test instruments based on 3GPP new air interface standards. This breakthrough laid a solid foundation for commercial 5G deployment. In addition, the company announced its 2018 5G scale experimental program, which included field testing in five cities: Hangzhou, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou, and Wuhan. Each city would deploy over 100 5G base stations, and 5G services and applications would be demonstrated in 12 other cities, including Beijing, Chengdu, and Shenzhen.
As a crucial driver for China Mobile’s “connected growth†strategy, the company projected that by 2020, IoT connections would reach 5 billion, and IoT revenue would hit 100 billion yuan. At the conference, China Mobile showcased various IoT solutions, including an intelligent urban lighting system based on NB-IoT technology. This system can automatically adjust lighting based on factors like time, light levels, and pedestrian traffic, and it supports remote control, energy consumption tracking, fault alarms, and real-time location monitoring. The technology has already been implemented in several cities in Guizhou and Gansu, achieving a 23% energy saving rate and reducing maintenance costs by 80%.
In recent years, China Mobile has also focused on expanding IoT applications in the digital home sector. Last October, the China Mobile Digital Home Cooperation Alliance was established, bringing together 68 member companies, including Xiaomi and Haier. This collaboration aims to drive innovation and create smarter living experiences through connected home solutions.
