The 5G era is rapidly approaching, and telecom operators are taking on significant responsibilities. In 2018, China Mobile announced its plan to build the world's largest 5G trial network, marking a major step forward in the global race for 5G technology. The company also reported that by 2018, it expected to have over 700 million 4G users, signaling a strong growth in mobile connectivity.
At the 2018 World Mobile Congress held in Barcelona, Spain, the theme was “CreaTIng a Better Future.†China Mobile showcased its vision of “Smart Connection, New Future,†highlighting innovations in 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT), digital home solutions, international business, and more. The company reiterated its commitment to building the world’s largest 5G test network, reinforcing its leadership in the next-generation communication landscape.
Chairman Shang Bing emphasized that with the rapid development of information and communication technologies, new trends are shaping the industry. China Mobile aims to lead this transformation by implementing its “big connection†strategy and focusing on integrated development through four key areas. He also noted that 4G user numbers were expected to surpass 700 million in 2018, while household broadband users would exceed 130 million.
During the event, China Mobile unveiled its latest R&D achievements, including the first successful end-to-end interoperability between the world's largest base station, terminal chips, and testing instruments based on 3GPP standards. This breakthrough laid the groundwork for future commercial 5G deployment. Additionally, the company launched its 5G scale trial program in five cities—Hangzhou, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou, and Wuhan—each with over 100 5G base stations. It also planned to demonstrate 5G services in 12 other cities, including Beijing, Chengdu, and Shenzhen.
As a key driver of China Mobile’s “connected development†strategy, the IoT division is set to reach 5 billion connections by 2020, with IoT revenue expected to hit 100 billion yuan. At the conference, China Mobile showcased various IoT solutions, including an intelligent urban lighting system powered by NB-IoT. This system can automatically adjust lighting based on factors like time, light levels, and pedestrian traffic, while also enabling remote control, energy usage tracking, and real-time fault alerts. The solution has already been deployed in several cities in Guizhou and Gansu, achieving a 23% reduction in energy consumption and an 80% drop in maintenance costs.
In addition, China Mobile has been actively promoting IoT applications in the smart home sector. Last October, the company established the China Mobile Digital Home Cooperation Alliance, which now includes 68 members such as Xiaomi and Haier, further strengthening its position in the connected living ecosystem.
