Chile Implements Back Home Project for Prisoners with VR to Help It Integrate into Society

Although the majority of VR users engage with it for gaming or watching immersive videos, there are innovative creators who are leveraging this technology for a more meaningful purpose. In Chile, filmmaker Catalina Alarcón has launched a powerful initiative called *Back Home* (or *Volver* in Spanish), which uses virtual reality to help incarcerated individuals stay connected with their families. This project aims to bridge the emotional gap between prisoners and their loved ones, offering a sense of normalcy and belonging during their time behind bars. The core idea of *Back Home* is to support the reintegration of prisoners into society by maintaining strong family bonds. For many inmates, the transition back into the real world can be overwhelming and isolating. By allowing them to experience the daily lives of their families through VR, the project helps ease that emotional burden and fosters a deeper connection. Alarcón worked closely with 12 women at the St. Joaquin Women’s Prison Center over the course of six months. Before the program began, she set up 360° cameras in the homes of the prisoners’ families. These cameras captured everyday moments—like children playing, family meals, or quiet evenings at home—that the inmates could later experience through VR. This allowed them to feel closer to their loved ones, even when physically separated. According to Alarcón, “I personally reached out to each family, explained the project, and arranged for someone to visit their home. We provided the 360° cameras to the families, who then recorded their daily routines. It was about capturing the small, intimate moments that make up family life.” The project not only gives prisoners a glimpse into their loved ones' lives but also encourages reflection and emotional healing. It's a unique way to humanize the prison experience and remind those behind bars that they are still part of a larger, supportive network. Looking ahead, Alarcón hopes to expand the *Back Home* initiative to more prisons across Chile, provided that funding becomes available. Her vision is to create a broader impact, using technology as a tool for empathy, connection, and hope.
