Although the majority of VR users engage with it for gaming or watching immersive videos, some innovative creators are using this technology to make a real difference—especially for those behind bars. In Chile, filmmaker Catalina Alarcón has launched a powerful initiative called *Back Home* (or *Volver* in Spanish), which uses virtual reality to connect incarcerated individuals with their loved ones.
The project’s main goal is to support prisoners in their transition back into society. Reintegration after prison can be incredibly challenging, often marked by isolation and emotional distance from family. *Back Home* aims to bridge that gap by offering a more personal and emotional connection through immersive storytelling.
Alarcón worked closely with 12 women at the St. Joaquin Women's Prison Center over the course of six months. Before the program began, she set up 360-degree cameras in the homes of the prisoners’ families. These cameras captured everyday moments—like children playing, family dinners, or quiet moments at home—that the inmates could later experience through VR.
She explained, “I reached out to each family personally, explained the project, and arranged for volunteers to visit their homes. The 360-degree cameras were handed to them, allowing them to record their daily lives. It was about capturing time and space, giving prisoners a glimpse into the world they might have missed while inside.â€
This unique approach not only helps reduce the emotional strain on both prisoners and their families but also fosters a sense of normalcy and belonging. Alarcón hopes to expand the *Back Home* project to more prisons across Chile, provided that funding becomes available.
By combining technology with compassion, her work shows how VR can do more than entertain—it can heal, reconnect, and offer hope.
