Three major mistakes in the use of frequency converters in energy saving

In many materials and literatures, industrial automation products are often described as power-saving or energy-efficient control systems. As a result, many people mistakenly believe that simply equipping equipment with an inverter will automatically reduce energy consumption. This is not entirely accurate. The inverter itself is not inherently an energy-saving device; its ability to save power depends largely on the specific application and operating conditions.

One common misunderstanding is that if two motors are running at the same frequency (e.g., 50Hz) and the torque does not reach the motor’s rated value, the inverter will still contribute to energy savings. However, this is incorrect. At a fixed frequency, the inverter does not significantly affect power consumption unless there is a change in load or speed.

Another misconception is that when two identical motors are operating at 50Hz—where one uses an inverter and the other does not—people often assume the inverter-equipped motor will use less energy. In reality, under the same load and speed conditions, the inverter does not necessarily lead to energy savings. The main function of the inverter is speed control, not direct energy reduction.

There is also a belief that inverters can save a significant amount of power during no-load operation. However, for drag-type loads, such as fans or pumps, the energy savings are typically minimal. In these cases, the inverter may not offer substantial benefits unless the load varies significantly over time.

The reason why inverters often appear to save energy is because they allow for variable speed control, which can optimize performance and reduce unnecessary energy use in certain applications. However, this does not mean that all inverters are energy-saving devices by nature. Whether an inverter contributes to energy efficiency depends on how it is used and the type of system it is controlling. It’s important to understand the actual role of the inverter rather than assuming it is always a solution for reducing power consumption.
