Samsung's exclusive OLED 90% market Chinese companies how to break through?

"Chinese companies first mass-produce LCD panels for LTPS backplanes and mass-produce AMOLED panels, which is a realistic choice." Following the BOE Oriental Erdos project, Shen Tianma will invest a 5.5-generation AMOLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode Panel) line in Shanghai. This has once again caused concern about the layout of next-generation display technology in China.

AMOLED is regarded as the next generation display technology with self-illumination, colorful color, flexible and flexible characteristics. In recent years, with the gradual maturity of the market and technology, China has set off an investment boom in AMOLED.

However, in the case of South Korea's Samsung monopolizes 90% of the global AMOLED panel supply, how Chinese companies break out is highly regarded.

Investment boom

At present, liquid crystal (TFT-LCD) is the most mainstream display technology in the world, and AMOLED technology is still immature in large-size fields. However, in recent years, the Samsung Galaxy series of smart phones have been selling well, making small and medium-sized AMOLED panels gradually accepted by the market.

A few years ago, China's Visionox, Rainbow, Hongvision and other companies wanted to seek breakthroughs in AMOLED technology, and they all ended without results. In the new wave of AMOLED investment in China, we have already seen the dawn of “landing”. According to the statistics of Qunzhi Consulting, there are three and two AMOLED lines in the 5.5 generations and 4.5 generations in China, both of which focus on small and medium size.

The BOE Erdos project with an investment of up to 22 billion yuan will be mass-produced this year. Qunzhi Consulting expects that the project will produce 54,000 LTPS (low temperature polysilicon) LCD panels and 18,000 AMOLED panels per month. Zhang Yu, vice president of BOE, told the "First Financial Daily" reporter yesterday that the LTPS panel will be mass-produced first, and the AMOLED panel will also be mass-produced this year.

Shen Tianma also invested heavily, and the registered capital of Shanghai AMOLED Project Company increased to 1 billion yuan. Shen Changma, secretary-general of Shen Tianma, said that the mature market, perfect technology reserves and improved company performance are the reasons for the 5.5-generation AMOLED line. The construction period generally takes 18 months. The domestic mobile phone brands such as ZTE, Huawei, Coolpad and Lenovo will be major client.

Not only BOE and Shenzhen Tianma, Xinli International also announced in December last year that it plans to launch a 4.5-generation AMOLED line in Huizhou with an investment of about 6.3 billion yuan. According to an industry veteran, after the first phase of the Xinli International Huizhou project is stable, it will introduce a second-phase investment, which may launch a 5.5-generation AMOLED line.

In addition, Guoxian is also building a 5.5-generation and 4.5-generation AMOLED line in Kunshan and Hehui Optoelectronics in Shanghai. The supporting investment is also keeping up. Shenzhen Textile A announced on the evening of March 10 that it will change the use of raised funds and merge the second phase of the polarizer for TFT-LCD and AMOLED.

The industry believes that the application of AMOLED in the small and medium size field has matured, coupled with the high-end smart phones, tablet PCs, and the rise of wearable devices, is an important background for China's round of AMOLED investment boom.

Is the step too big?

This is a cake that looks beautiful and is expanding rapidly, but it has hidden risks.

The AMOLED line has a capacity utilization rate of only about half. The industry told reporters that last year's global AMOLED panel production capacity is 3.3 million square meters per quarter, demand is 1.5 million square meters; this year's production capacity is 4.6 million square meters per season, demand is 2.3 million square meters per season; next year, the two will increase to 700 respectively Wanhe 3.6 million square meters.

Samsung currently accounts for 90% of the global AMOLED panel supply, and most of it is self-used, with very few take-aways. It was supplied to Nokia, HTC, etc., and was later discontinued. Therefore, Zhang Xingang, the editor-in-chief of China LCD Network, believes that this is a “supply-driven market” and the level of technological development determines market acceptance.

In the view of Li Yaqin, research director of Qunzhi Consulting, "China AMOLED line will be mass-produced this year, which will break South Korea's monopoly pattern of AMOLED panels in the world." However, China AMOLED panel production time is two years later than South Korea, there is a clear gap in upstream supporting and mass production experience. "Samsung AMOLED production equipment is mostly customized, engineers have experience."

It is also straightforward in the industry that AMOLED panels require LTPS backplane processes and OLED processes, which are technically difficult, which affects yield, capacity utilization and cost. Samsung has led the way in small and medium-sized AMOLED panels and has formed a brand effect. But as new entrants, demand is uncertain as processes and supplies are still unstable.

In order to reduce the risk, several AMOLED lines under construction in China are mostly compatible with LCD panel production of LTPS backplane. Zhang Bing believes that the LCD panel resolution of LTPS easily reaches 400 PPI (pixels per inch), which has met the needs of high-end mobile screens.

Li Yaqin also believes that China's AMOLED industry is in its infancy. The AMOLED panel design capacity of BOE Erdos is only 18,000 pieces per month, which is about one-tenth of the monthly capacity of Samsung's two 5.5-generation AMOLED lines. "In the absence of mass production technology, Chinese companies first mass-produce LCD panels for LTPS backplanes and mass-produce AMOLED panels, which is a realistic choice."

From the perspective of the global panel industry, South Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan are all four pillars. With the opening and commissioning of several 8.5-generation LCD panel lines in China, China's mainland production capacity will surpass Japan and Taiwan in the next few years, making it the second largest LCD panel production site in Korea.

In the emerging field of AMOLED, China is also expected to surpass Japan and Taiwan. Li Yaqin said that there is no mass production of the 5.5-generation AMOLED line in Taiwan. The LTPS LCD panel line is an old production line and cannot meet the demand of high-end mobile phones. Japan's Sharp has followed up with the AMOLED program, but the investment is cautious; Sony and Panasonic have also terminated the AMOLED joint research and development project.

However, Wu Rongbing believes: "The mainland China AMOLED panel has not yet been officially mass-produced, and it is too early to comment on its competitiveness." Zhang Yu also admitted that the AMOLED industry's local material matching rate is "less than half".

The industry recommends that China's AMOLED industry should develop in a healthy way, in addition to breaking the bottlenecks in materials, equipment, talents and technology, "the future will break through in large size." After several 5.5-generation AMOLED lines are put into production in China, there will be tens of thousands of substrates per month. One substrate can cut 300 5-inch mobile phone panels. The production capacity is particularly large, and the risk of oversupply needs to be guarded.
