Linear Technology Corporation has launched the LTC3789, a high-efficiency synchronous buck-boost DC/DC controller that can achieve up to 98% efficiency. This device is capable of delivering a stable output voltage regardless of whether the input voltage is higher, lower, or equal to the output. Traditionally, high-power boost and buck circuits require a transformer or two separate DC/DC converters—one for boosting and one for bucking. However, the LTC3789 operates in a single inductor and four-switch synchronous rectification mode, allowing it to deliver up to 150W of output power in a single package. When multiple units are connected in parallel, even greater power levels can be achieved.
The LTC3789 offers an optional fixed operating frequency ranging from 200kHz to 600kHz, and it can also synchronize with an external clock within the same range using its built-in phase-locked loop (PLL). With a wide input voltage range of 4V to 38V and an adjustable output range from 0.8V to 38V, the LTC3789 is well-suited for a variety of applications such as industrial control, automotive systems, solar power, and high-power battery-powered devices. The seamless transition between buck and boost modes further enhances its versatility.
In both buck and boost modes, the LTC3789 uses a proprietary current-mode control architecture to ensure constant frequency operation. It features four powerful N-channel MOSFET gate drivers, making it ideal for high-performance power conversion. Additionally, the device includes an accurate constant current regulation loop that allows for precise control of input or output current across a wide voltage range. The input current limit function helps prevent overload on the power supply, while the output current limit provides a reliable solution for applications like battery charging or LED lighting.
The LTC3789 comes with comprehensive fault protection, including overvoltage, overcurrent, and short-circuit protection in all operating modes. During shutdown, the device disconnects both the input and output voltages to ensure safety. Users can choose between continuous mode and pulse skip mode to optimize efficiency under light load conditions. The chip also features an adjustable soft-start, a power-good output signal, and a ±1.5% reference accuracy over the full junction temperature range of -40°C to 125°C.
The LTC3789 is available in two packages: a 28-pin 4mm x 5mm QFN and a 28-lead SSOP. The price for 1,000 pieces is $4.65 each. For more details, visit the official website.
