It is not a new thing to promise to bring all the home equipment into a system of smart home center control equipment. LG is preparing to launch its own SmartThinQHub at the International Consumer Electronics Show.
This cylindrical device communicates with a wide variety of devices via popular smart home protocols such as Bluetooth, Z-Wave and ZigBee. The SmartThinQHub comes with a 3.5-inch LCD screen.
There are speakers in the SmartThinQHub or black or champagne gold grid, which will inevitably compare it to Amazon's Echo smart speakers. Like Echo, SmartThinQHub can also wirelessly transfer music from iHeartRadio or from your personal collection, but without cloud connectivity and voice-activated AI. SmartThinQHub will announce new notifications, but it won't understand you like Amazon Echo.
LG's SmartThinQ ovens and washing machines are the first generation of smart appliances. As the name suggests, SmartThinQHub is compatible with them and is also compatible with other smart appliances and connected TVs. Hub can also be directly compatible with the SmartThinQ sensor announced by LG in September. The sensor can be applied to existing washing machines, refrigerators and air conditioners, which means you can intelligentize your home appliances.
In addition to LG's own hardware, SmartThinQHub is also compatible with Nest learning thermostats, online automation services IFTTT and Lifx color-changing smart LED lights. It's not yet known whether SmartThinQHub will help those devices work together or provide their own automation and rulemaking capabilities through the smartphone app. The current price and release date are still unclear.
After comparing it to Echo, if SmartThinQHub is more expensive than the $180 Echo, I would be surprised because Echo has its own AI, and SmartThinQHub does not. However, we will know soon.
