In a recent development, Alibaba Cloud, Sichuan Special Drive Group, and Dekang Group have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at training and researching the ET Brain technology, ultimately leading to the successful implementation of AI-powered pigs. According to reports, during the initial theoretical phase, the ET Brain contributed to an increase in the annual production capacity of sows by 3, while also reducing the mortality rate by approximately 3%. This marks a significant step forward in applying artificial intelligence to agriculture.
In China, tech giants like Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent are taking on the role of driving the next era of artificial intelligence. More than a year ago, Alibaba introduced its AI system called the ET Brain. In December last year, Alibaba Cloud officially launched an upgraded version of the ET Brain, which integrates various sectors such as urban management, industrial optimization, medical assistance, environmental monitoring, and air traffic control. The system also focuses on industrial AI applications. During the Yunqi Conference, Alibaba Cloud unveiled the official logo of the ET Brain for the first time.
When it comes to real-world applications, Alibaba's ET Brain has already made several promising explorations. One of the most notable is its smart city initiative. At the end of last month, Malaysia officially announced that it would adopt Chinese AI technology for the first time to transform its urban infrastructure. They signed an agreement with Alibaba Cloud’s ET City brain. Following this partnership, AI will be fully integrated into Malaysia’s traffic control, urban planning, and environmental protection systems. As part of the first phase, the AI system will be applied to 281 road intersections in Kuala Lumpur, enabling dynamic traffic light adjustments and real-time accident detection to ease traffic congestion.
This deal with Malaysia represents the first international "export" of the ET Brain. However, the project has been gradually rolling out within China’s cities for some time. Earlier, the ET Brain was tested in Hangzhou, where it demonstrated remarkable results. According to Wang Jian, chairman of Alibaba's Technical Committee, traffic is a major challenge in any large city. The “city brain†AI system can autonomously manage and optimize the massive data generated daily from surveillance cameras and traffic lights.
In 2016, a pilot project was launched in Xiaoshan District of Hangzhou. The system used surveillance cameras and road condition sensors to count the number of vehicles in the city—approximately 1.2 million. Even after implementing restrictions, the number of cars on the roads remained around 1.2 million. The system then adjusted traffic lights based on real-time flow, reducing average travel time on elevated roads by 5 minutes and increasing the speed on regular roads by 15% to 20%.
Recently, citizens in Chenzhou have started to take notice. With the help of the ET Brain, Ganzhou City has developed an overall structure known as “Four Nets and One Brain.†While it may be hard to imagine what the future ET Brain could do for cities, Wang Jian once said that the city is the largest intelligent hardware ever created by humans—but one that operates with limited intelligence. By leveraging data resources and AI, cities can address public challenges more effectively.
