Design advantages of edge-lit LED backlight technology

The side-light type LED is placed on the upper and lower sides of the backlight. The layout adjustment greatly reduces the use of the LED, thereby reducing the production cost and energy consumption, and has great benefits for manufacturers and consumers. However, its weakness of local dimming has led to the birth of a locally dimmable matrix backlighting scheme, a backlighting technique that combines side-in and direct-down.

Recalling the history of TV development, the traditional CRT TV in the home must be the product that everyone thought of for the first time. In 2000, plasma TVs began to appear; around 2003, CCFL (Cold Fluorescent Tube Light Source) LCDTVs began to appear and became popular; until 2010, LED backlight technology gradually replaced CCFL. Most people inside and outside the world should be able to completely replace CCFL as the backlight of the main TV in two to three years.

Most people know that LED backlights have several advantages, including thinner TV thickness, lower power consumption, and richer colors. These advantages are reflected in the public's ability to simply compare with CCFLTV. In addition, the price of LEDTV has been declining, making LEDTV more advantageous in terms of cost performance. These are the main reasons why LED-backlit TV can be popularized in the market.

During the development of LED backlights, technology has been improving. The development of the original dot matrix to today's sidelight is one of the important technological advancements. Under various obvious advantages, manufacturers have actively developed LED-backlit TVs in recent years. Domestic brands such as Hisense, TCL, Konka, and Skyworth are all working hard to develop their own LED backlights. Among them, technology improvement and cost control are important links. In order to make modern LED backlights popular in the market, everyone has begun to consider the use of LEDs to reduce product costs. But the most important thing is to improve the energy consumption significantly to match the country's latest environmental protection and energy conservation policies. Use less LEDs and adjust them in the backlight array. The original dot matrix type placed the LEDs on the TV backlight on average, while the sidelight type placed the LEDs on the upper and lower sides of the backlight. This layout adjustment greatly reduces the use of LEDs, thereby reducing production costs and energy consumption.

But most people think that LEDs are less used, and the brightness of the screen will not drop? Isn't TV picture quality also falling? This problem is expected by manufacturers early on, so most manufacturers will find the best way to solve it.

PCB = printed circuit board and PCBA = printed circuit board assembly. For PCB, it means the copper circuits be printed on a board, and so the main composition are copper and board.

 

The copper is the circuits material and the circuits designed by the PCB designers. Depends on the current in the circuits, the PCB copper thickness could be done with 0.5oz-10oz. But the PCB designers need be noted that the copper track width/space need be enlarged with the thickness. For example, the minimum copper track width/space could be 3mil/3mil with 0.5oz, but would be 4mil/4mil with 1oz.

 

The PCB board could be rigid PCB, could be flex PCB and also could be Flex-Rigid PCB. And the materials could be FR4, PI, Aluminum, Copper-based, Rogers, Teflon, etc. They have different applications. For example, FR4 PCB is the most commonly used for rigid PCB and almost good for all electronics products; PI is the most commonly used for flex PCB; Aluminum and copper-based have good thermal diffusivity and always used for LED PCB ; Rogers PCB and Teflon PCB are always used for High Frequency PCB, etc.
