As Wang Yanhui, Secretary-General of the China Mobile Alliance, explained: “There are many small brands and even 'cottage' phones in China. It’s hard to ensure that they come with clean software from the factory. Even some big-name manufacturers sometimes fail to prevent this, as employees may use hidden methods to pre-install malicious apps.” In some cases, your mobile data might be used without your knowledge. Here are two common situations: 1. Your phone may have pre-installed apps that you rarely use. 2. Malicious apps or ad plugins might be running in the background, consuming data without your awareness. So, how can you protect yourself? Here are some tips: 1. Always download apps from official channels—especially banking and payment apps like Alipay. 2. Monitor which apps use the most data. If an app is using a lot of data without your knowledge, consider removing it. 3. Use a secure WiFi network for online banking or payments, or stick to your carrier’s network. Avoid unknown public WiFi to prevent data theft. 4. If your phone is lost or your account is compromised, report it immediately, freeze your accounts, and change your passwords. 5. Be cautious when granting permissions like "Send SMS," "Read SMS," or access to sensitive information when installing or using apps.
