This has become a new battleground for global smart machinery competition.
The growth of Taiwan’s intelligent machinery industry is rapidly accelerating, and this momentum is essential for the successful integration of Industry 4.0. Taichung, as a vital hub for the machine tool industry, plays a crucial role in this transformation. In collaboration with the Taichung City Government, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and industry partners like Dingxin Computer and Taichung Seiki, Tokai University has set up the IMUX base within the Taichung Software Park. Its mission is to cultivate, guide, develop, test, and validate user experience design for intelligent machinery.
Professor Zhou Zhongxin from East China University of Technology, who is involved with IMUX, noted that although the base is still in its early stages, many manufacturers have already begun expressing interest in integrating user experience design concepts. This collaboration between smart machine producers and design experts is expected to significantly enhance the international competitiveness of Taiwan’s intelligent machinery industry.
Tokai University has a strong reputation in user experience design, human factors engineering, and industrial design. These capabilities provide essential technical support for fields that require multidisciplinary expertise beyond what a single industry can offer. In the future, the IMUX base will also serve as an open space to encourage innovation and talent development.
Taichung Seiki played an early role as a demonstration site in this initiative, helping to drive industry adoption. Huang Minghe, Chairman of Taichung Seiki, pointed out that traditionally, machine interface designs were based on factory rules, which made it difficult to account for user experience. However, as the manufacturing industry moves toward customization, human-centered interfaces will become increasingly necessary.
In the past, equipment manufacturers lacked the resources and expertise to fully address these needs. That’s why professional support from experienced designers and engineers is now more important than ever. Industry experts also note that Taiwan may not be well-suited to compete directly in global software markets dominated by giants like Amazon and Alibaba.
