Geek aerial photographer and his aerial industry

"Superman" flies in the air, he travels through the city, snowy mountains, and grasslands. .. .. He raised his hand in excitement and waved, the desert just below the surface of Mars. .. .. He wiped the sweat, just crossed the ocean like a quiet starry sky. .. .. He raised his hand and looked at it, oh, arrived, the street, the church, the lawn were opening his arms and welcoming him. He landed and took the bride's hand, set off again, flew happily, and finally landed on the lawn of the hotel where the wedding was held.

This is Li Nian’s aerial wedding video “Superman Welcome”. This fun video, created from the first perspective of the air, brings surprises and joy to the wedding.

Geek aerial photographer

Li Nian is the founder of Grey Aerial Photography. Born in 1989, he played airplane models from an early age and was passionate about aircraft and aviation technology. When studying a major in a university, he often takes some videos. He thought of playing the model, why not shoot from the aerial perspective? How much visual impact and new experience will it bring to people!

So, in 2010, Li Nian of the junior year began to try to combine shooting and aircraft. He bought the kit from the Internet and assembled his first aerial camera. "The plane is different from the current one. It is a winged, fixed-wing structure with a small camera in front." Li Nian said. However, after the aircraft was assembled, the first test shot failed. It quickly swept through the air and the picture was shaken.

After that, Li Nian began to pay attention to foreign forums. He found that players are trying a "multi-rotor" that can hover in the air. In 2011, Li Nian designed a second aerial camera. He drew a picture on a computer, used a CNC machine tool to shape and splicing glass fiber, carbon board and other materials, and then installed the motor and circuit. A common six-rotor aircraft was completed today. Li Nian also became the first group of college students to design multi-rotor aircraft. The plane took some videos on campus. Li Nian constantly debugs it to make it more stable.

The picture taken by the second plane was still shaking. "If you don't shake, you need a set of clouds, so that the camera can always face the target you want to shoot." Li Nian explained, "At that time, the technology of the platform was still very primitive. We used the steering gear and the sensor performance. Not very good, even with this kind of pan/tilt, the picture jitter is still very obvious."

Until the fourth plane, Li Niancai really realized his aerial photography dream. During his college years, Li Nian set up his own aerial photography studio. Now, his aviation business is already quite large.

Change aerial photography

In 2012, Li Nian used a commercial drone. At that time, the first batch of consumer-class drone companies in Shenzhen, such as Dajiang, began to launch stable and mature products.

In the drone market, military drones dominated by large companies have been in development for decades, and consumer-grade drone products pioneered by start-ups have only emerged in recent years.

Thanks to the close cooperation between chip, sensor and motor companies and aircraft companies, consumer drones have achieved qualitative breakthroughs in recent years. Technologies such as Texas Instruments' digital signal processor enable real-time data collection and processing, as well as miniaturization and low power consumption, which has made the drone's stability, cruising speed and flight range breakthrough.

At this time, the brushless direct drive motor was also started in the drone. "With this kind of pan/tilt, no matter how the aircraft swings from side to side, the pictures taken are very stable and much more stable than what we have done ourselves." Li Nian said.

In 2013, Dajiang launched a wizard spy drone. A large number of smart chips are embedded in the elf, which makes it smarter and easier to control, and there is a whirlwind in the mass market.

When I saw the elf, Li Nian was pleasantly surprised. Previously, only experienced players could successfully start the drone. Take power, the voltage of different parts of the aircraft is different, there is a certain order requirement for power-on. Every time, Li Nian must first control the 5V, then the 12V image transmission power, and then 25V or 48V power, and can not overcharge. Now, the drone is embedded with the power management chip, and as long as the power button is pressed, nothing else is needed. At the same time, the original drone needs the aerial photographer to match the shooting and image transmission equipment. Now the elf is fully integrated with this, which makes Li Nian save the tedious assembly work.

The drone was priced at $679 at the time and was acceptable to consumers. "The elf is an important node for commercial aerial drones." Li Nian said. In addition to professional aerial photography companies, it has become increasingly popular among geeks, media and general consumers. After that, except for the customization requirements in extreme environments, Li Nian used commercial drones for aerial photography, which allowed him to focus more on aerial photography services.

Low-cost, convenient, and better-performing UAVs have evolved from a hobby hobby to an emerging industry that is changing the aerial photography market. Originally, aerial photography required the lease of a manned helicopter. The price of one day was about 200,000 yuan. It also involved air traffic approval, route application, fuel oil, etc. The aircraft was also transported to the shooting location by special means. Except for some big productions and special needs, no one will consider aerial photography. Nowadays, consumer-grade drones are likely to become aerial photographers, and the aerial photography market has also entered explosive growth with the help of the public.

"Texas Instruments has always been a good partner for innovation in Dajiang. As a leader in different industries, we all hope to use the power of innovation and technology to change people's lives. At present, Dajiang is constantly breaking through technology to give aerial photography enthusiasts the most professional The aerial photography experience, the latest Micro Four Thirds (Micro Four Thirds) camera brings a qualitative leap in aerial image quality," said TIm, head of innovation at DJI.

The data shows that Dajiang currently accounts for 70% of the global consumer-grade drone market, of which 80% are sold overseas.

“Dajiang is a very representative innovation enterprise in China. It is the star of the global drone market. At its initial stage, Texas Instruments has cooperated with it.” Hu Yuhua, President of Texas Instruments China, said, “Every generation in Dajiang Texas Instruments is involved in the development and upgrade of the product." The latest technology from Texas Instruments is constantly being used in drones to help Dajiang UAVs stay ahead of the curve.

In the past two years, Li Nian has been photographed at the Everest Base Camp at an altitude of over 5,000 meters in response to customer demand. He also went to the Taklimakan Desert in Xinjiang. Not long ago, he used the all-air clap method on the grassland to advertise a new car for an internationally renowned car company. Once the ad was launched, it was on fire – in the vast prairie, on a winding road, the three generations of BMWs performed a picture of historical interlacing. This aerial photography has certain difficulty in controlling the relative speed and position of the drone and the vehicle. On the same day, two DJI planes took off 30 flights to complete the filming.

The future of aerial photographers

In larger applications, aerial drones have also begun to appear frequently. In the TED video, Li Nian saw the "UAV Airborne Flight" demonstrated by Professor Vijay Kumar of the University of Pennsylvania. Twenty UAVs continuously transformed the array in the air like magic, and even placed a three-dimensional pyramid shape, which can detect the front and quickly change the array through obstacles.

Today, companies in the United States, Europe and other countries are exploring the flight formation flight of consumer-grade drones. The drone realizes networking and flight through autonomous air-precision positioning and communication, thereby realizing some new applications. For example, the data of two 100-meter drones in the air can automatically generate a three-dimensional digital map of a city on the computer, and combined with today's hot virtual reality technology, can achieve unexpected use.

In addition to aerial formations, today's drones are required to capture stunning images, relying on the experience of aerial photographers, and it must also fly remotely within the range of aerial vision. In the future, the combination of drones and artificial intelligence technology will enable true autonomous flight and on-demand smart aerial photography.

In 2011, when Li Nian introduced people to drone aerial photography, even if it was a free service, no one was interested. In just two or three years, Li Nian drove the drone, flying thousands of times a year, digitizing the world in the air. Right now, the young geek aerial photographer hopes to replicate standardized aerial photography services in some cities. Imagine that these aerial digital information may one day be easily connected to computers and mobile phones. The business model on this will be unpredictable. It may change people's aspects from economic to cultural life and achieve a future air industry. .
