Voice control will become the inevitable development trend of smart home in the future

According to Ovum's "Smart Home Forecast: 2015-2020" report, the popularity of smart home technology will accelerate in the next four years and beyond, and many solutions are currently accessed and controlled through smartphone applications.

However, for many future use cases, this approach is not efficient on the one hand, and it is inconvenient on the other. Constantly using a smartphone (even if it's just through a single application interface) to execute the simplest commands can be cumbersome for the user. So the industry needs to develop new smart home interface technologies, and sound as one of the most natural ways of human interaction seems to be the easiest choice.

Michael Philpott, head of Ovum's consumer services business, said that in the future, smart home technology will be able to work without any human interaction; it will also be able to make its own decisions based on certain rules and external conditions/information. However, there are always situations where users want to interact with the technology themselves, for example, to change or check the settings in the home. Although this information can be obtained by accessing the mobile app, in fact, it is still useful when the user is not at home, but when the user is at home, uninterrupted access to the mobile app may become a problem. If the user can simply get the desired response by speaking, then everything will be faster and more convenient.

As vendors have joined the voice control army, the current installation of voice interfaces on each device has caused a lot of waste. Users don't need to talk to all devices or have devices and talk to them, they just want to be able to interact with them through the medium of voice. If the user wants to check if the back door in the home is locked, they don't want to go to the back door and ask if it is locked. They need to ask questions (whether the door is locked) and get an answer in any room in the house. They want to have some core interfaces at home that connect to the smart home platform and all the devices on the platform.

Amazon is a company that invests heavily in smart home voice interfaces. There are other companies like Apple and AT&T. But in Ovum's view, Amazon's current solution is closest to providing the types of scenarios in the discussion above. Amazon's Alexa personal assistant first appeared in Amazon's Echo speakers, but it has now been used in other devices, such as Invoxia's Triby speakers (partly due to Amazon's $1 million fund). Amazon Echo speakers have also been integrated into other smart home ecosystems, such as Vivint. As of October 2015, the Vivint smart home system has more than 1 million users in North America. By expanding its own ecosystem and integrating it into other ecosystems, Alexa can not only penetrate into more homes, but also interact with rooms and rooms in these homes through other third-party connected devices. This will help users access smart home technology anywhere in the home, rather than just interacting at a central point.

The voice interface is actually equal to the AI platform behind it. Like all other voice interfaces on the market today, Alexa is not a finished product. Such defects can lead some people to believe that voice control is nothing more than a gimmick. However, Ovum believes that with the growth and further improvement of the ecosystem (both including the natural voice function of the enhanced interface and the AI platform behind it), the smart home based on voice control must be the future development trend.
