The International Research Group has discovered new genes that are strongly linked to a high risk of asthma in children, with one of these genes previously unknown to be connected to the condition. Asthma is the most common chronic illness among children and the leading cause of hospitalization for young Danish patients. Children at high risk of severe asthma attacks often require frequent hospital visits, which places a heavy burden on families and consumes significant social resources. However, doctors still lack sufficient awareness of infant asthma, making it challenging to prevent and treat effectively. Researchers hope that this breakthrough will lead to better understanding and management of the disease.
“Our findings indicate that asthma attacks causing hospitalization in young children are often genetically driven. Genes play a more significant role in childhood asthma than in adult cases. By analyzing children's DNA, we identified a gene called CDHR3, which was not previously associated with asthma. This gene appears to be crucial in the early development of the condition. Our research supports the idea that asthma should be classified into subtypes based on genetic maps, allowing for more targeted prevention and treatment in the future.â€
The study focused on 1200 children aged 2 to 6 who had been hospitalized multiple times due to severe asthma attacks. These children were compared with 2,500 healthy individuals. Through genetic screening, researchers identified a new risk gene, CDHR3, and conducted further studies on children from Denmark and other countries.
