Although there are many methods for quitting smoking on the market today, it basically has little effect on old smokers. Recently, a California startup Mind Cotine tried to use vr technology to help smokers quit smoking.
The company was founded by three partners from Argentina. They were Cristian Waitman, Nicolas Rosencovich and Emilo Goldenhersch. They believe that smoking is not just a physiological requirement. Last week, they launched a crowdfunding project called VR Quit on Kickstarter. The project uses biofeedback and immersive psychological technology to help smokers achieve their goal of quitting smoking by changing their behavior.
Goldenhersch said: "By letting the smokers take a step back, think calmly and focus for a while, we try to get the smokers out of the regular reaction. Through immersion experience, smokers can understand the thoughts and feelings when they want to smoke."
From a technical perspective, VR cessation is achieved through the APP program. The APP supports the current mainstream mobile VR system. Users just download the app and they can experience meditation and calm images. The APP allows users to forget the cigarettes in their hands by allowing the user to watch a series of images, thereby achieving the purpose of quitting smoking. The APP also has a variety of tools and resources. Users can quit nicotine dependence as long as they use it every day for 20 minutes.
Goldenhersch said: "Everyone quits their methods differently, so we want to help people find a tailor-made smoking cessation program."
The company is currently working with institutions in different countries and regions, including Unversidad Siglo21 in Argentina and Universidad de la Communicación in Mexico in order to integrate AI into the APP. However, the primary goal of the APP is to expand the use of the crowd.
“We chose to start from the ground up and make it available to any smartphone, not from the top mainstream distribution channel or funds. As we have established a complete user community, we can work with any organization that wants to join it. Investors form strategic partners together."
It's hard to imagine that someone would smoke with a VR device while they were gathering with friends. However, MindCotine should be a free tool as an active smoking cessation cause, no matter how others will treat it.
