Taiwan media reported that Wistron is likely to receive orders for Sony's LED-backlit TV after its Sony LED certification for its LED Light guide technology.
Wistron currently owns 18% of Maolin Optoelectronics. If an order is received, Wistron will ship LED-backlit TVs to Sony in the second half of the year. The news also said that Wistron also plans to jointly build an LED-backlit LCD module factory in Guangdong with Maolin Optoelectronics.
According to Jessie Lin, an analyst at Digitimes Research, Maolin's Microlens light guide technology reduces the number of LEDs used in edge-lit LED backlighting. This technology can help Wistron improve the competitiveness of the LED market.
In Jessie Lin's view, Maolin's technology enables Wistron to obtain OEM orders for Sony's small and medium-sized LED-backlit TVs.
Wistron's LCD TV shipments this year will reach 5 to 6 million units, of which 50% will come from Sony and 15-20% from Toshiba and Best Buy.
