What is Samsung's first AMOLED monitor?

At the Society for Information Display (SID) 2017 Annual Conference, Samsung Display unveiled the world’s first 9.1-inch diagonal active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) monitor capable of scaling both up and down. Unlike traditional flexible screens, this innovative panel allows for three-dimensional deformation, with the ability to flex up to 12 millimeters either inward or outward. As illustrated in the accompanying image, pressing the center of the screen causes it to indent and then smoothly return to its original flat state. This advancement marks a significant leap forward in display technology, offering unprecedented flexibility and adaptability. Panel manufacturers have long been exploring ways to create flexible displays by utilizing thinner materials like polyimide substrates, indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) transistors, and multi-layer organic and inorganic packaging solutions. To achieve scalability, manufacturers must carefully engineer electrodes to accommodate wrinkling patterns, while also addressing the complexities of transistor design. Additionally, substrates and packaging materials require elasticity to ensure durability during repeated bending cycles. Unlike conventional flat-panel manufacturing processes, producing scalable displays involves unique materials such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), zinc oxide (ZnO), and organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). Initially, these advancements seemed incremental; however, over time, the entire supply chain for scalable displays began shifting to accommodate these novel requirements. Despite ongoing challenges in optimizing production methods and enhancing reliability, scalable displays hold immense promise for future applications. According to IHS Markit, these displays could soon find their way into architectural designs, fashion items, accessories, wearable tech, and even medical equipment. Their ability to adapt dynamically opens up endless possibilities for creative problem-solving and innovative design concepts. While there remains work to be done regarding fine-tuning manufacturing techniques and ensuring consistent performance, the potential impact of scalable displays on various sectors cannot be overstated.
