Early in the morning, Apple unveiled its latest generation of iPhones in the United States. This year marked the 10th anniversary of Apple Inc., and many were eagerly waiting for the release of new products.
The iPhone X: A High-End Launch
At 1 a.m. on the 12th (Beijing time), Apple officially launched its new devices in Apple Park, the company’s new headquarters in Cupertino, California. After waiting for two hours, the reporter finally entered the event venue.
As Tim Cook took the stage, the event began with a nostalgic look back at Apple’s history. The two-hour conference featured a range of new products, from the Apple Watch 3 to the Apple TV 4K, and eventually the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the highly anticipated iPhone X.
Contrary to expectations, there was no iPhone 7s or 7s Plus this time. Some netizens joked that forum moderators who had pre-registered for the 7s models were “worn out†after the event.
The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus retained similar designs to previous models, with 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens, respectively. They featured the traditional Home button but included some upgrades, such as double glass construction, improved camera sensors, and enhanced video capabilities.
The iPhone X, however, was a major leap forward. It featured a full 5.8-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2436×1125, a sleek design with aerospace-grade aluminum, and a powerful A11 Bionic chip. It also introduced facial recognition as the main unlocking method, replacing the traditional fingerprint sensor.
Despite its revolutionary features, the iPhone X came with a hefty price tag—$999 in the U.S.—making it the most expensive iPhone ever released.
Competition Heats Up: Xiaomi and Others Take the Stage
On the day before Apple’s event, Xiaomi launched the Mi Mix 2 and Mi Note 3 in Beijing. The Mi Mix 2 featured an 18:9 full-screen design and was powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor. Other brands like vivo, Huawei, and OPPO also released new models around the same time, creating a competitive atmosphere.
Industry insiders believe this timing was strategic, aiming to capture market attention before Apple’s big reveal and secure a share of the upcoming upgrade cycle.
Facial Recognition: The Future of Mobile Security?
The iPhone X’s use of facial recognition marks a significant shift in mobile technology. While under-display fingerprint sensors are still in development, Apple chose to lead with facial recognition, signaling a potential industry trend.
Analysts suggest that Apple’s move is not only about innovation but also a response to criticism about its lack of groundbreaking ideas in recent years. By introducing a high-profile feature like facial recognition, Apple aims to reassert its leadership in the tech world.
Although the future of biometric authentication remains uncertain, the push toward full-screen smartphones has already gained momentum. As more manufacturers introduce similar designs, the full-screen era is set to dominate the market in the coming months.
