Two companies' products have been on sale this Tuesday, including lighting kits from Lutron and smart home hubs from Insteon. Products from three other companies will be launched in July, including Ecobee's intelligent thermostats, iHome's power packs, and home sensors from Elgato that monitor air quality, weather, energy consumption, and whether doors and windows are locked.

It’s been a year since Apple released HomeKit. HomeKit has been integrated into iOS 8 to help users control smart home devices. HomeKit is not an application, but rather an infrastructure that enables smart home devices to communicate with each other.

With HomeKit, these smart home devices can also be controlled via Siri. In addition, users can configure different settings for different scenarios, such as when they get home from work or when they go to bed, to automatically adjust the operation of lights, music, televisions, and other devices.

Among the products released on Tuesday, Lutron's lighting kits help users switch lights and adjust brightness; Ecobee's intelligent thermostats provide Nest-like energy features to support users when they are away from home; iHome's power outlets help users switch electrical equipment; The sensors provided by Elgato can be connected to a hub called Eve. Insteon offers a Bridge that supports HomeKit, which connects to the user's current smart home system and communicates using a variety of different wireless communication standards.

A variety of products will be sold through Apple retail stores and online stores. Lutron's lighting kit, priced at $229.95, was launched through Apple retail stores on Tuesday. Elgato's Eve and sensors will be sold separately for prices ranging from $39.95 to $79.97. Ecobee's smart thermostat is priced at $249 and will be available through Apple retail stores in July.

Although these are just some of the simplest devices in the family, it would be a good start if users are interested in home automation. At Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next week, we're likely to learn more about HomeKit. HomeKit is likely to be another powerful ecosystem for Apple.
