Power Integrations Introduces Qualcomm® Quick Charge 2.0 Smartphone Charger Reference Design

21ic Power Integrations has introduced the first reference design for a charger power supply that supports the Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 protocol. The Quick Charge 2.0 protocol, released by Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) earlier this year, enables users' mobile devices (such as tablets or mobile phones) to charge up to 75% faster than traditional USB-powered technology.

Power Integrations has developed the ChiPhyTM family of AC-DC wall plug-in charger interface ICs that, when combined with the company's AC-DC switch ICs, integrate all necessary components to add fast charging to AC -DC wall plug-in charger. The CHY100 IC can detect commands from devices that support Quick Charge 2.0, then adjust the output voltage of the AC-DC wall-plug charger to achieve greater power input to the device's battery via standard USB wiring. When plugged into a 5 V USB powered device that does not support the Quick Charge 2.0 protocol, the CHY100 IC automatically disables the high voltage output to ensure safe charging and backward compatibility with older hardware.

As an evaluation platform for ChiPhy IC, DER-381 introduces a constant voltage/constant current charger power supply with a maximum power of 24 W using TOPSwitchTM-JX switch IC and CHY100D interface IC design. The power supply has a universal input voltage range that provides an optional output voltage (5 V, 9 V, and 12 V) with a maximum constant current of 2 A. The TOPSwitch-JX IC maintains nearly constant efficiency over a wide range of output voltage and current loads.
