Full analysis of the development experience of the US semiconductor lighting industry

February 18-20, 2009, the Strategy in Light Conference, which leads the global LED industry, was held in Silicon Valley, California. The conference was hosted by Strategies Unlimited and PennWell, from North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East. More than 600 representatives from 38 countries including Asia, Africa and Australia attended the conference. Qi Jun, deputy secretary-general of the National Semiconductor Lighting R&D and Industry Alliance, was also invited to participate. Through the conference and visits and visits in the United States, Deputy Secretary-General Qi Jun analyzed the development characteristics of the US LED industry from the aspects of technology, market application, policy promotion, standards and intellectual property rights, and industry organizations. We can learn from the development experience of the US LED industry and learn from each other's strengths.

First, technology

Research hotspot 1: General lighting has become the focus of research, system integration around drive, heat dissipation, and optical design.

From the meeting situation of Strategies in light, more discussion focuses on the related integration technologies of general lighting, and promotes the application through grand prizes, demonstration applications, and local regulations.

Research hotspot 2: In order to enter the field of illumination, the Droop effect under high current injection must be solved to improve the internal quantum efficiency.

Different extension manufacturers and research institutions have different views on the above issues, such as piezoelectric effect, Auger recombination, and carrier recombination rate.

From the understanding of the Photonics West conference of SPIE in January, the high-power LED index is the highest CREE, more than 160lm/W, Lumileds 130-140 lm/W, Nichia120-130 lm/W, but Nichia's low power index is very High and more focused on backlighting applications, Bridgelux has begun to extend to packaging and applications.

Some experts pointed out that if the problem can be solved from the mechanism of material structure growth, the dependence on the substrate will be greatly reduced, but the technical solution has yet to be verified.

Second, the market application

The applications currently visible in the United States are mainly in traffic signals and highway information boards, while the application of signal lights and car lights (but 80% of truck lights have been used by LEDs and motorcycle lights are also widely used) is not as popular as in China.

Seeing more apps in Las Vegas, such as the sky (with thousands of square meters), slot machines in the casino, may become an important breakthrough for LED applications in the United States; in Los Angeles, outside the Universal Studios screening room Some applications, it is said that Disney amusement park also has some applications, there are solar LED lawn lights in the gardens of residents near Newport Beach; on the TV, some bars, dance halls and LED lighting effects are also seen. These applications are still dominated by color changes and decorations, and American applications are not as lively as domestic ones. There are also hotels, gas stations, roads, and parking lots that use functional lighting. At a COSTCO supermarket in LA, three 1.5-watt LED bulbs (promoted to replace 40-watt incandescent lamps) cost $13.99.

For road lighting, many highways in the United States do not have a large number of street lamps in China. Even with the installation of street lamps, the spacing is very large, about 50-80 meters. But the former US President Bill Clinton’s foundation is preparing to promote 15,000 LED street lighting in Los Angeles (140,000 street lights), and the project leader also made a special speech at the Strategies in light conference.

Responding to the financial crisis by accelerating energy-saving green LED applications has become a hot topic. At present, the US DOE is preparing to promote LEDs to replace neon lights. It is said that the LED market is 500 million US dollars, and the lighting market is 2 billion US dollars. GE and Cao Group have been selected as major suppliers.

GE currently focuses on LED applications and has occupied 80% of the signal market. It is in the leading position in the US. PHILIPS has just entered the US market and often faces these giants. The competitive pressure of small companies will become more and more, especially for Chinese companies. It may become the target of mergers and acquisitions and commissioning of multinational giants, which in turn leads to the emergence of energy-saving lamps and lack of brands.

Third, policy promotion

The United States is a two-tier government. The technology research and development is mainly driven by the federal government departments. For example, DOE, enterprises and universities directly apply. There is no corresponding department in the state, and there is very little funding support.

The US DOE's SSL program is mainly developed and implemented by RADCLIFF. The consulting company has a dedicated project manager, and NAVIGANT provides DOE with market research and other consulting reports. RADCLIFF organizes 2-3 roundtables every year, 1-2 workshops, summarizes the implementation of the plan, and develops new support directions. At present, the focus of support has shifted to applications. At the start of 2004, 80% is basic research. In 2006-07, basic research and applications accounted for about 50% each. In 2009, the focus was on applications, with a budget of about 16 million US dollars. There are also commercial auxiliary projects, such as the government procurement catalogue, recommended to the military procurement department. The workshop is about 200-300 people at a time, usually in February or August of each year, and industry and academia participate in group discussions.

The DOE puts forward several issues in various directions through the round table. After the discussion topics are discussed, they are discussed in the annual workshop according to the importance, and the meeting is organized by RADCLIFF. The DOE online publication guide, the general R&D project supports an annual funding of 500,000-600,000 US dollars, and the commitment unit needs about 30% of the matching. After the unit is applied, the DOE organization experts will review it anonymously. The project is prepared at the same time as the project is submitted, and the DOE statistics submits the budget proposal to the Congress through the assessed project budget. If the approved budget is cut by Congress, the DOE will reduce the funding for each project accordingly. The funds are allocated on a yearly basis. Every six months or one year, the DOE will evaluate the implementation of the project through a written report or a meeting, and the problematic issue will be suspended. After the completion of the project, it is usually a written report, and the implementation of the project will have a credit history.

Companies in the initial stage can also apply for SME Support Funds (SBIR) similar to the Innovation Fund, ranging from $100,000 to $500,000. Individuals can also apply, usually for a three-year period, once a year.

DOE promotes the replacement of neon LEDs, which can be supported by local power companies. For example, California aims to reduce power consumption by 20% by 2015, and power companies will subsidize electricity consumption based on users who use LEDs.

In addition to a few developed states such as California, the state government rarely has Funding to support R&D, but the state government can introduce some standards or regulations to promote product applications, such as California's Title 24. There are also some investment promotion jobs in the United States that are similar to those in China. There are some preferential policies for entering enterprises.

In addition to California, Massachusetts, Colorado and other states with more power and higher electricity costs, other states are less motivated to promote energy-efficient lighting, such as Utah's electricity price is only 7 cents.
