On April 22, 2010, Cypress Semiconductor Corporation announced the introduction of an AC-DC digital power controller for LED lighting.
The CY8CLEDAC01/02 controller provides a cost-effective solution for non-dimmable and dimmable LED lighting with high efficiency and energyStar requirements. They can perform automatic dimming detection, so they can be used with existing mainstream wall dimmers, down to 2% and no flicker.
The new AC-DC controller features "primary-side sensing" and regulates LED current, eliminating the need for light isolation and other secondary-side control circuitry. This technology reduces the number of components required to the limit, reducing board size, power consumption, and overall hardware cost compared to other isolated solutions. The new controller also features circuit protection, which is not normally available in other "primary edge sensing" solutions. This embedded protection features include overvoltage protection (OVP), output short circuit protection (OSCP), peak current limit protection (PCLP), current sense resistor short circuit protection (CSSP), and over temperature protection (OTP).
The reference design for CY8CLEDAC01 and CY8CLEDAC02, including all circuit diagrams, BOM, geber files, and all the documentation needed to design a power supply for a full-featured LED retrofit bulb. The new AC-DC controller extends Cypress's lighting portfolio, effectively Covers the LED retrofit bulb market. Together with the PowerPSoC® family of embedded power controllers, they form the industry's first high-power LED single-chip control and drive solution. The AC-DC product line and Cypress's PowerPSoC family cover a wide range of LED applications, from LED retrofit bulbs to high-end LED lighting products that require multiple functions such as communication, diagnostics, color change, and more.
