"The Old Man Picking Dreams" and "Free Whale" Make the Cut for the Venice International Film Festival’s Main Competition
A few days back, the lineup for the 74th Venice International Film Festival's main competition was revealed. Among the selected titles, two standout VR animations made the cut: "The Old Man Picking Dreams" from Pinta Studios and "Free Whale" by Sandman Studios.
"The Old Man Who Picks Up Dreams" narrates the heartwarming tale of an elderly man who eschews waste-picking, instead opting to gather discarded dreams from a massive landfill. His loyal puppy accompanies him through this whimsical journey, adding a touch of optimism amidst the chaos. Meanwhile, "Free Whale" follows young Shem and his robotic companion, Young, as they embark on an exciting adventure across an alien planet.
As a relatively new medium, virtual reality brings fresh dimensions to storytelling with its immersive qualities and interactive elements. Known as the "Compassion Machine," VR has gained increasing recognition from prestigious award bodies like the Oscars, Cannes Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Primetime Emmys, and more. Notably, some VR pieces have already earned significant accolades. For instance, Google's "Pearl" was shortlisted for Best Animated Short at the Academy Awards, while Facebook/Oculus's "Henry" became the first VR film to win an Emmy.
The Venice International Film Festival, alongside the Cannes Film Festival, Berlinale, and the Oscars, ranks among the world’s most respected film events. The inclusion of VR in its main competition highlights the growing importance and potential of this medium. Additionally, the selection of these Chinese VR projects signifies global acknowledgment of both Chinese studios and their creative capabilities. It is encouraging to see how domestic and international VR studios alike can keep delivering exceptional content, helping to broaden the appeal of VR technology within mainstream audiences.
In the ever-evolving landscape of digital entertainment, it’s thrilling to witness how VR continues to push boundaries and redefine cinematic experiences. With each new project, we inch closer to a future where immersive narratives become an integral part of our cultural fabric."
