Recently, sources said that Toshiba Corporation of Japan is planning to enter the overseas nuclear power industry again. Toshiba has begun negotiations with the Ukrainian state-owned nuclear power company Energoatom to provide turbine generators for its nuclear power plants. The two companies signed a memorandum in October 2017.
It is reported that Toshiba said in March 2017 that after the collapse of the US nuclear power company Westinghouse Electric Co., the company will withdraw from the design and construction of all overseas nuclear power plants. However, according to people familiar with the matter, Toshiba believes that if it only supplies equipment to overseas nuclear power plants, it will not suffer such huge losses.
Energoatom operates 15 nuclear reactors and is currently building two additional nuclear reactors in Ukraine. It plans to replace the generators of the old reactor to increase the amount of electricity generated. Toshiba hopes to reach an agreement with Energoatom to export generators for replacement and provide maintenance services after they are put into production.
