Huawei authorized Qualcomm to use the patent situation to expose the core competitiveness

The world of intellectual property is undergoing subtle changes. Intellectual property patent applications from Chinese companies in the third world came to the fore. And began to export patents to world-class European and American companies.

Data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) show that China's international trademarks and patent applications have grown substantially over the past year. According to WIPO data, in 2015, international applications for patents filed through the WIPO Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) increased by 1.7% to 218,000, setting a new annual record.

Leading the PCT applicants in 2015 is the telecommunications company, in which China Huawei ranked first in the second consecutive year with 3,889 published PCT applications, 456 more than in 2014. In the United States, Qualcomm ranked second in 2015, with 2,242 applications filed, and China’s ZTE ranked third with 2,155 PCT applications.

Huawei's rapid accumulation of intellectual property comes from continuous investment in research and development. PwC's management consulting agency, Strategy, published a new study showing that Chinese companies' R&D spending is leading the world, and Huawei is the world's top ten for the first time. According to Huawei's annual report, its R&D expenditure in 2015 was 59.6 billion yuan (US$9.48 billion). If it is included in the rankings, Huawei will be ranked first among Chinese companies, ranking 9th in the global R&D expenditure list (2015) For the 16th place, it ranks between Novartis and Johnson & Johnson, which is the first time Huawei has entered the top 10 global R&D expenditures. It is equivalent to 78% of Intel, the world's number one R&D company.

In May 2016, Huawei filed an intellectual property lawsuit against Samsung in the United States and China. In the lawsuit, Huawei asked Samsung to compensate Huawei for its intellectual property infringement, including high-value patents for designing communication technologies and software for Samsung mobile phones. On the other hand, Huawei also began licensing Huawei to Huawei. The patented technology reflects its core competitiveness.

According to statistics, in July last year, Huawei authorized 115 US patents to Qualcomm subsidiaries. From April to June this year, Huawei authorized 308 Chinese patents to Qualcomm subsidiaries. The following picture shows some patents:

From Huawei's statistics on the patents granted by Qualcomm, Chinese companies are more likely to compete with multinational companies in international competition, and holding patents will put themselves in a favorable position. Under the wave of innovation of 5G and Internet of Things, many influential innovation companies around the world are in the process of transformation, and the cooperation between the two sides has become a big trend.
