Professor Cai Zuquan, the originator of China's electric light source (photo)

The "May 1st" Shencheng is full of lights and charming nights. The reason why the lights on the elevated, shopping malls and stadiums are bright is because they use the new light source technology of the 21st century--metal halide lamps, and one of its developers is the founder of China's electric light source business, Shanghai. One of the first batch of labor models, Professor Cai Zuquan of Fudan University Electric Light Source Institute. On the eve of Labor Day, the reporter opened the door of the 82-year-old inventor and found that Cai Lao couldn’t sleep for a moment. He smiled and said: “It’s just right, look at my new invention 1

Changed from apprenticeship to founder

Many middle-aged Shanghainese people still remember that in the 1960s, there was a “man-made small sun” in the People’s Square. This long-arc light was called the Chinese’s “gas of glory”, and the inventor Cai Zuquan became famous. The name of "China Edison". Although he was the vice president of Fudan University and a professor of electric light source, Cai Lao still said modestly: "I am an authentic worker."

When Cai Zuquan became an apprentice at the 14-year-old drug factory, he only had a third-grade primary school culture. After blowing glass bottles for more than ten years, Zheng Changshi and Fang Junxin, professors of the Department of Physics of the Jiaotong University, who worked part-time in the factory, were treated by the two professors and they were transferred to Jiaotong University as assistants. "Pneumonia was a refractory disease at that time. If X-rays were used, it would be early to find early treatment. But at that time, foreign countries blocked the technology in China, and Fang Junxin took my self-reliance to do X-ray tube, which also made me realize the importance of research and development. To be strong, we must innovate independently."

In 1952, the department was greatly adjusted. Cai Zuquan went to Fudan to set up China's first electric light source laboratory. The first hydrogen lamps, high-pressure mercury lamps, xenon lamps, long-arc xenon lamps and energy-saving lamps in China were born from his hands. Today, 80% of the world's energy-saving lamps are produced in China, and the annual output of Chinese lamps reaches 8.1 billion. Cai Laogong is indispensable.

Do not make the invention uncomfortable

Cai Lao’s home is a sea of new lamps. Cai Lao pointed at the faint blue light on the porch and said: "My house is almost entirely energy-saving lamps. It is better for us to do it ourselves. The children are now dealing with the light. The eldest son is the general manager of a private lighting company and the daughter is another. The lighting engineer of the company."

Since retiring in 1992, Cai Lao has basically issued a patent every year. In 2002, Qian Peisheng, Chairman of Dongsheng Electronics Group Co., Ltd. established a technical center and testing center, and invited the retired professor of Fudan University and the chairman of the Municipal Lighting Society Zhang Haijun as the director of the technical center. Professor Zhang Zhang, who was unable to live without it, came to Dongsheng, thus reviving the second spring of the old inventor.

In 2003, he and Professor Zhang developed a portable UV germicidal lamp, which was approved by the Ministry of Health and applied for a patent for invention. It will be introduced to the market this year, bringing convenience and peace of mind to tourists. Cai Lao said: "I am going to the company's laboratory every week for two or three days. The light source business is a bright career, and it is also my biggest hobby in my life. I don't feel uncomfortable when I am invented."
