Power Integrations Introduces Power Design Kit

Power Integrations introduces an ultra-small power product reference design kit (RDK-131). It helps engineers design high-efficiency LED power supplies to replace energy-consuming incandescent lamps. The kit also gives designers a power supply circuit that fits into an LED bulb socket and ensures LED bulb power for replacing incandescent lamps. The product meets the requirements of electromagnetic compatibility standards.

Unlike incandescent lamps, which can be powered directly from the grid, each LED bulb requires a power supply built into its screw (E27) or bayonet (GU10) socket.

"Making a power circuit that fits into such a small space is not an easy task, especially if you need to effectively suppress electromagnetic interference to meet test standards. To solve this thorny application problem, Power Integrations has introduced a volume. Smaller SO-8 packaged LinkSwitch-TN product line for non-isolated off-line switch ICs. The reference design kit RDK-131 with this device includes a tested power supply sample, blank PCB, LinkSwitch-TN Samples and design guidelines for how to design LED Lighting with our ICs. This reference design kit greatly simplifies LED lighting design and speeds time to market.” PI Director of Marketing, AC-DC Product Manager Don Ashley said.

Because the thermal effects of power generation account for 40% of the total global greenhouse gas emissions, relevant regulatory agencies and governments around the world are looking for ways to reduce energy consumption. For example, in a recent parliamentary debate (Reuters/Yahoo Wednesday, January 31, 2007), California Rep. Lloyd Levine commented: "The incandescent lamp was developed and used in about 125 years, and its efficiency is extremely low. Only five percent of the electricity consumed is converted into light." If his proposal, 'How many members of the House of Representatives are required to change the light bulb bill,' passed, California will ban the use of incandescent from 2012 light. In sharp contrast to incandescent lamps, LED bulbs consume only one-third of the electricity consumed by incandescent lamps and have a longer life.
