Korean equipment manufacturers want to break the monopoly "mining" MOCVD market

Recently, the industry revealed to Gaogong LED that the Korean manufacturer TOP Engineering Group is quietly laying out in China. So far, 12 MOCVD equipment orders have been obtained, but it is unclear which epitaxial plant uses TOP Engineering's MOCVD equipment.

However, such news is not unfounded. This month, Taiwan’s LED investment case on the mainland is closely related to TOP Engineering.

On June 16, Taiwan Liyin Co., Ltd. invested a total of 6 billion yuan in the new Lijing Optoelectronics LED project in the Wuhu National High-tech Industrial Development Zone in Anhui Province. According to the cooperation agreement reached between Taiwan Liyin Co., Ltd. and Wuhu High-tech Zone Management Committee in February this year, Liyin plans to invest 6 billion yuan in 5 years to introduce more than 100 MOCVD equipment and supporting production lines to mass-produce nitriding. Gallium high-brightness blue-green LED. The first phase of the project will invest 680 million yuan and 12 MOCVD will be introduced within one year.

According to Gaogong LED reporter, Taiwan Liyin Co., Ltd. has been established for 30 years and has rich experience in LED epitaxial technology. In 2010, it became a strategic partner with TOP Engineering Group, a well-known listed company in Korea. TOP Engineering Group was listed in South Korea in 2003 and is the second largest equipment manufacturer in Korea, mainly producing liquid crystal display equipment, OLED production equipment, and semiconductor equipment.

On April 17 this year, TOP Engineering signed a contract in Yangzhou Investment Project. TOP Engineering will invest 30 million US dollars to build a battery module base, mainly producing batteries for mobile phones and computers. The second phase of the project will produce semiconductor equipment. It is expected that after the project is put into production. Annual sales of $150 million can be achieved.

Can TOP Engineering get a share?
An unnamed industry insider analyzed that Liyin Company is the agent of TOP Engineering in Taiwan. It was originally thought of Jiangmen investment, but it may be because it did not get the relevant preferential policies. Now it is running to Wuhu, which is equivalent to Wuhu. The government paid for the equipment it bought.

"If you do an epitaxial film, you will definitely use TOP Engineering equipment," but for the TOP Engineering equipment, the above-mentioned industry believes that "MOCVD equipment sold in Korea on the mainland should have no customers, and TOP Engineering has not sold one in Korea. Taiwan MOCVD equipment".

For potential competitors, Veeco Greater China President and General Manager Wang Keyang is indifferent. “Because Veeco's equipment has many advantages, it is not only a large-capacity production equipment, especially the product yield is a global leader. ".

"In the future, there will be MOCVD equipment manufacturers in Korea to compete with us, but the focus is that Veeco will spend 100 million US dollars in research and development. Veeco has its own core technology and has accumulated decades of experience. These competitors may I learned some of our fur, but the essence may not be able to grasp it, and this essence is improving at any time," Wang said.

As for TOP Engineering's expansion of the MOCVD equipment market in China, it remains to be seen whether it will be a part of it.

MOCVD equipment development boom
In order to get rid of MOCVD equipment as soon as possible, the Korean government has promoted the LED equipment self-management plan since the second half of 2009. It plans to invest 50 billion won (about US$45 million) in research and development funds for the promotion of MOCVD equipment in the three years from 2010 to 2012. Self-made, introduction of process automation systems, and development of high-speed packaging / testing equipment.

According to reports, Hansung Engineering (Jusung Engineering) is a leading company in the MOCVD equipment self-made program in Korea. Its equipment was completed in June 2010, and the Korean subsidiary Top Engineering was also completed in June 2010. MOCVD equipment development.

Applied Materials recently developed a prototype of MOCVD equipment and worked with IMEC to produce an 8-inch silicon substrate epitaxial wafer on MOCVD.

The Chinese government's enthusiasm for MOCVD equipment continues unabated, and the call for localization of MOCVD equipment is not limited, but it still takes time to test in terms of mass production and marketization.
