DOE Announces Re-opening L Prize Competition for Par38 Replacement Lamps

On March 9, the US Energy Agency (DOE) announced the reopening of the L Prize competition to replace the Par38 halogen lamp. The award was established under the guidance of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act and was published by the DOE in 2008 with a prize of $5 million. Designed to encourage lighting manufacturers to develop high-performance, energy-efficient LED replacement lamps to replace the most widely used and energy-efficient conventional lighting.

The two competitions released at that time were for the replacement of 60W incandescent lamps and Par38 halogen lamps. In August 2011, Philips won the L Prize for the 60W replacement lamp. As of January 2011, the DOE has not received the L Prize award application for the Par38 replacement lamp, and the DOE has been suspended. Based on some lessons from the 60W alternative light competition, the Par38 replacement lamp competition has been adjusted to match the speed of technological innovation and accelerate the marketization of award-winning products. However, the original technical requirements remain unchanged.
