AnalogicTech launches new WLED driver

Santa Clara, Calif., June 2008 Developer of Analog Power Technology (Nasdaq Stock Market Code: AATI), a developer of power management semiconductor devices for mobile consumer electronic devices, announced the launch of a chip code-named AAT2848. This is a new triple mode charge pump driver chip for white light emitting diode (WLED) backlight display and flash applications. In a small 3mm x 3mm TQFN33-20 package, the AAT2848 can drive up to 4 backlight channels with up to 30mA per channel; and two flash channels with up to 300mA of drive current, with a total parallel current of up to 600mA, this new device is mid-range Designers of camera phones offer an attractive space-saving solution.

Until recently, designers had to use discrete devices for backlighting and flash functions when designing mid-range camera phones with 2 to 5 megapixels, said PhilDewsbury, product line manager at AnalogicTech. Integrating backlighting and flash output current levels (expected from only one independent flash driver chip) on a single compact chip, the AAT2848 helps handset designers reduce board space, component count and simplify design.

New fade in/out function

The AAT2848 is a dual mode charge pump that operates in 1X and 1.5X modes. The chip can drive up to four backlighting diodes (LEDs) that deliver up to 30mA per channel in dual mode (1X and 1.5X modes). It can drive two flash LEDs and deliver up to 300mA per channel in triple mode (1x, 1.5x and 2x modes).

The AAT2848 uses two patented single-wire simple serial control (S2Cwire) digital interfaces for LED current switching, setting and setting. The chip can be programmed to set the backlight current to up to 32 levels. Any level. The flash LED output can be individually programmed to 16 levels. The full-scale current of the backlight and flash is individually set by an external resistor.

The new driver chip also features an innovative fade-in/fade-out feature that gradually increases backlight LED brightness from off to full brightness in a single 63-step linear step, which can be controlled with an external capacitor. By replacing the microprocessor-based software solution with the same functionality, this feature provides a smoother transition to full brightness while reducing software overhead.

The chip also adds a user-programmable safety timer to protect the flash LED from temperature damage. This feature turns off the flash after the preset time has elapsed. Both the safety timer and flash/strobe operation can be turned on via a separate flash pin.

The AAT2848 also has built-in short-circuit and over-temperature protection. Soft-start circuit limits current surges during startup and mode transitions
